Online education, or distance education, will clearly be an integral part of the future of education. In a 2006/2007 study, the U.S. Department of Education reported 12.2 million enrollments in online education courses. Through the same study, the Department of Education also reported that 66 percent of two and four year universities offered distance education. Online courses, accelerated programs can help students earn degrees quickly

As the cost of higher education continues to rise, many prospective college students and their parents are wondering how they will be able to finance a four-year degree program at a traditional college or university. Fortunately, some of these individuals may be able to reduce the cost of tuition by considering the offerings of online schools.

An increasing number of institutions around the country allow students to work at their own pace, which could enable them to complete their coursework quickly. In addition, many of these programs do not require students to adhere to a rigid class schedule. Consequently, online degree candidates may be able to reduce the amount of time it will take to complete their programs, which could save them money on the cost of their education.

In fact, some schools are beginning to realize the high demand for accelerated learning and are therefore creating programs that can help students get a jump start on their college requirements or earn a degree as early as high school.

Dual programs help secondary school students earn associates degrees

While advanced placement courses and vocational classes have long helped exceptional high school students earn college credits, some campus-based and online schools have built on this concept by creating dual college programs.

For example, Sequoia Choice Arizona Distance Learning has launched an initiative that enables prospective college students to complete postsecondary coursework in conjunction with their high school curricula.

Upon their successful completion of placement exams for local colleges, participants can design Individual Education Plans, through which they can determine how much postsecondary work they can take on. Depending on their level of determination and extracurricular activities, some students may use the program to earn associates degrees in conjunction with their high school diplomas.

This project also offers a financial benefit to hard-working students, as Sequoia Choice covers all book and tuition fees for college courses as long as students maintain a C average or higher. As a result, students who stock up on college credits before entering a classroom-based or online degree program may be able to finish sooner and avoid hefty tuition bills.

Campus-based and online colleges partner to help transfer students

While students who earn credits during high school can get ahead in the degree program of their choice, some individuals may wish to complete a few years of college-level work before they put their educational careers on the fast track.

To help these students explore their interests without falling into a great deal of debt, some schools are partnering to help associates degree holders use credits they have already earned to transition into a bachelors program.

For example, the Texas-based Lone Star College System has collaborated with the University of Phoenix to award university credit hours to Lone Star classes, the Austin Business Journal reports.

Students who earn a C or higher in classes or a vocational degree program will receive credit at the university, which they may use to complete a bachelors-level curriculum at one of the school’s 17 locations or though an online degree program. Lone Star students who are within 12 months of earning a degree will be allowed to pre-apply to the Phoenix system and will receive access to the university’s online resources if they are accepted.

To cater to growing numbers of dedicated students, some schools – such as the Georgia Southwestern State University – are developing three-year bachelors programs that can help students enter the workforce earlier, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Students in these programs may be required to enroll more classes each semester, attend school over the summer or take online courses.
